COVID-19 Relief: Oxygen, Masks and Food When It Mattered Most

During the pandemic, the most useful thing we could do was simple and urgent: get oxygen, masks and food to people who could not wait.

By Sirigireddy Arjun Reddy2 min read

Few of us will forget 2020 and 2021. Andhra Pradesh recorded more than 20.6 lakh confirmed COVID-19 cases and over 14,000 deaths by August 2021. Behind those numbers were families searching for hospital beds, for oxygen and, during the lockdowns, sometimes just for their next meal.

What we did

Our COVID-19 relief focused on three things:

  • Oxygen cylinders, for patients and families who needed them.
  • Masks, distributed when they were scarce and essential.
  • Food. By our count, we provided food for about 30,000 people for 40 days.

The volunteers who carried this out worked through real personal risk, and I remain grateful to every one of them.

The oxygen crisis

The second wave in April–May 2021 was the hardest period. In Kadapa district, the New Indian Express reported in May 2021 that none of the district's 1,012 oxygen beds was vacant. Some families had to arrange oxygen cylinders themselves. Liquid oxygen supply was about 17.5 KL a day against a requirement of nearly 30 KL. In Tirupati, 11 patients died on 10 May 2021 when oxygen pressure dropped at a government hospital.

In that environment, a cylinder delivered quickly could make the difference. The work was about speed, sourcing and coordinating with families and medical staff, never about publicity.

Feeding people for 40 days

Running food relief for weeks is an operations problem:

  • Sourcing enough ingredients every day while supply chains were disrupted.
  • Cooking and packing hygienically, with distancing.
  • Distribution that reached people who could not come out: the elderly, the sick, daily wage workers.
  • Consistency. A meal that arrives one day and not the next breaks trust. We committed to a fixed period and kept to it.

Lessons

  1. In a health emergency, follow medical advice and the authorities. Volunteers should support the system, not improvise around it.
  2. Protect volunteers. Masks, distancing and rotation are not optional.
  3. Dignity in distribution. People in need should not have to queue for photographs.
  4. Plan for duration. Crises last longer than you expect. Commit only to what you can sustain.
