Free Education for Children of Single Mothers

A single mother carries a household on one income and one pair of shoulders. Taking the cost of her children's education off her plate is one of the most lasting forms of help.

Of all the work we do, supporting free education for children of single mothers may have the most lasting impact. Relief helps someone through a crisis. Education changes the course of a life.

Why single mothers

A single mother often carries a household on one income, and sometimes with little family support. Every rupee is already committed: rent, food, health. When something has to give, it is too often a child's schooling, especially a daughter's. Removing that cost removes one of the hardest choices she faces.

Working alongside government support

Andhra Pradesh has significant public support for school education. From the 2025-26 academic year, the Thalliki Vandanam scheme provides ₹15,000 a year per child, for Classes I to XII, to eligible mothers or guardians. Before that, Amma Vodi offered similar support.

Volunteer and charitable work is most useful in the gaps: families who are not covered, costs that go beyond a scheme, and the practical help of getting a child admitted and keeping them in school.

What good education support looks like

  1. Continuity. Supporting a child for one year and then disappearing can do more harm than good. Commit for as long as you can sustain.
  2. Dignity for the mother. She is not a charity case. She is a parent making the best decisions she can, and support should respect that.
  3. Privacy for the child. No child should be singled out in class as "the sponsored one".
  4. Attention to the whole child. Books, uniforms, transport and encouragement matter alongside fees.
  5. Follow-through. Track attendance and progress, and stay in touch with the family.

Why it matters to me

Every child deserves the chance to go as far as their ability will take them. When we help a child of a single mother stay in school, we are investing in a future that will benefit that family, and our society, long after any of us are around to see it.
